So what does that mean for speed? Well, photons travel at the speed of light, which is roughly 299,792,458 meters per second (or 186,000 miles per second if you prefer).

While fiber optics can't reach that speed, 31% slower than the speed of light is still faster than what copper cables are capable of achieving. Double that with the range of 550 meters for 10 Gbps multi-mode or up to 40 kilometers for single-mode cable. Then add increased bandwidth of 60 Tbps and higher, and you can start to see how the rate at which you transmit data increases exponentially with fiber optics.
